Now I know why the wolf walked in a circle

“Now I know why the wolf walked in a circle”, was a performance took place over the course of 18 hours without any rest, or sitting and relaxing.

The first part of the performance began at a location near the ocean in Northern Ireland and the second part was in a building at Ulstra University. This performance focused on the vulnerability of the Urmia Lake in Northwestern Iran, which has been drying up over the last decade due to the actions of the corrupt Iranian government.

In the first part, which took place overnight, with every movement of the ocean’s ebb and flow, I moved between two locations by the sea. With each movement of the tide, Wirya’s howl responded to the sound of the waves, moving from his body toward the flow, reminding us of the resistance and the suffering of nature, of the lake that was devastated by the Iranian regime

With each ebb, Wirya returned to the beach and walked in circles and spoke about the situation of Iranian and Kurdish activists and prisoners in Iran. Moving in circles, Wirya reenacted the pacing of a wolf that he had seen at a zoo in Iraq. The wolf had moved painfully for many years in this small cage.

For the second part of the performance, I was driven blindfolded back to university building, so that there would be no visual and sensory separation between the first and second parts of the performance. The second part of the performance was held with the participation of the artist .Jims king.
